Haruomi Hosono's Lost 80s Track to Debut as Tate Museum Exhibition BGM
An unreleased 1980s composition by legendary musician Haruomi Hosono will finally be heard as background music for a major British art exhibition in Tokyo.

An unreleased track from the 1980s by electronic music pioneer Haruomi Hosono will make its debut in an unexpected venue. "Anemo Wheel" will serve as background music for the audio guide at "Tate Museum - YBA & BEYOND: 90s British Art That Changed the World," opening tomorrow at Tokyo's National Art Center.
Hosono, who serves as the exhibition's ambassador, created the track decades ago but it has remained unheard until now. The timing feels perfect - the veteran musician's atmospheric compositions have always had an artistic quality that complements visual art.
For international fans unfamiliar with Hosono, he's a towering figure in Japanese music who helped shape the country's electronic and ambient music scenes. As a founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and through his solo work, he's influenced countless artists worldwide. His experimental approach and genre-blending style make him an ideal choice to soundtrack an exhibition about groundbreaking British art from the 1990s.
The exhibition focuses on the Young British Artists (YBA) movement, which included controversial figures like Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. Having Hosono's previously unheard music accompany this collection creates an interesting East-meets-West artistic dialogue.
"Anemo Wheel" joins a growing list of archival Hosono material that continues to surface, much to fans' delight. The exhibition runs through May, giving visitors plenty of opportunity to experience this unique pairing of visual and sonic art.
