Kōkusai GENJI celebrated 39 years since their formation with the release of their debut single's music video. The group posted the "STAR LIGHT" MV on YouTube on June 25, 2026—exactly the date they were formed in 1987.

The video captures the group's original seven members in their element: wearing classic 1980s double-denim outfits while roller-skating through a city street. It's a nostalgic look at their iconic debut era, when acrobatic roller-skating performances first grabbed audiences' attention.

Kōkusai GENJI was created when two groups merged on June 25, 1987. Five members from "GENJI" (Kazumi Morohoshi, Hiroyuki Satō, Atsuhiro Satō, Junichi Yamamoto, and Akira Akasaka) combined with two members from "Hikari" (Kōji Utsumi and Shigeo Osawa) to form the seven-member group. Less than two months later, on August 19, 1987, they released "STAR LIGHT," which was produced by legendary duo CHAGE and ASKA. The single became their official debut and established their signature style: energetic performances featuring roller-skating and acrobatics that set them apart from other idol groups of the era.

The group's roller-skating concept was genuinely novel at the time, and "STAR LIGHT" helped launch them into stardom during the height of the Japanese idol boom. Their blend of dance, athleticism, and visual appeal made them one of the most memorable acts of the late 1980s.

This anniversary release serves as a fun reminder of where the group started and the fresh energy they brought to the idol scene nearly four decades ago. For longtime fans, the video is a chance to revisit those early days; for newer viewers, it's a window into the visual and performance style that defined an era of J-pop.
