LUNA SEA announced on February 22 that their longtime drummer Yamada Shinya (ε±±η°ηη’) passed away on February 17 at the age of 56.
Shinya died from complications related to Stage 4 colorectal cancer that had metastasized to his brain. The drummer was first diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2020. His condition worsened in September 2025 when doctors discovered he had developed a brain tumor.
Shinya was a founding member of LUNA SEA, one of Japan's most influential visual kei and rock bands. Formed in 1989, LUNA SEA became pioneers of the visual kei movement alongside bands like X Japan and helped bring the genre to mainstream success in the 1990s. The band is known for hits like "ROSIER," "STORM," and "I for You."
Throughout his career with LUNA SEA, Shinya's powerful drumming style became a cornerstone of the band's sound. The group achieved massive success both domestically and internationally, selling millions of albums and performing at major venues including the Tokyo Dome.
LUNA SEA had been active in recent years following their reunion in 2010 after a seven-year hiatus. The band continued touring and releasing new material, with Shinya remaining an integral part of their live performances despite his health challenges.
The loss of Shinya marks the end of an era for both LUNA SEA and the broader Japanese rock scene. His contributions to visual kei and Japanese rock music helped shape a generation of musicians and fans worldwide.
