LUNA SEA has lost one of their founding members. The legendary visual kei band announced February 22 that drummer Yamada Shinya passed away on February 17 at age 56.

Shinya had been fighting Stage 4 colorectal cancer since his 2020 diagnosis. The cancer later spread to his brain, forming a tumor that was discovered in September 2023.

A Pillar of Visual Kei

Shinya was instrumental in LUNA SEA's rise as one of Japan's most influential rock bands. Formed in 1989, LUNA SEA helped define the visual kei movement alongside X JAPAN and became one of the genre's biggest international success stories. The band's theatrical style and powerful rock sound earned them a devoted fanbase across Asia and beyond.

Throughout his illness, Shinya continued performing with the band when his health allowed. LUNA SEA maintained an active touring schedule, with the drummer's dedication to his craft inspiring fans worldwide.

Legacy Lives On

Shinya's drumming style was a driving force behind LUNA SEA's most beloved songs, from early classics like "Believe" to recent releases. His technical skill and stage presence helped establish the band's reputation as one of Japan's premier live acts.

The remaining members – RYUICHI, SUGIZO, J, and INORAN – have not yet announced plans for the band's future. For now, the J-rock community mourns the loss of a true pioneer who helped bring Japanese rock music to the global stage.

Shinya's influence on visual kei and Japanese rock will continue through the countless musicians he inspired and the timeless music LUNA SEA created together.
