Rhythm & Drum Magazine's July 2026 issue, released today, pays tribute to Shunya, the legendary drummer of LUNA SEA, who died on February 17 at age 56 following a battle with stage 4 colon cancer.

The 60-page memorial special takes a comprehensive look at Shunya's legacy as a drummer and musician. Using archived material from the magazine's back catalog alongside fresh interviews, the feature explores his influence across multiple angles—from his signature drumming style and equipment evolution to his broader impact on Japan's rock scene.

Testimonies come from LUNA SEA's surviving members (SUGIZO, J, INORAN, and RYUICHI) as well as prominent drummers and musicians who collaborated with him, including Shinya of DIR EN GREY, Pierre Nakano of Ling Tosite Sigure, and members of BULL ZEICHEN 88, La'cryma Christi, and other acts.

About Shunya

Born in 1970 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Shunya grew up immersed in traditional Japanese music—his parents were Noh performers—before discovering Western drumming as a teenager. He formally joined LUNA SEA in 1989 and helped the band achieve major success after their 1992 major label debut with the album IMAGE. LUNA SEA became one of Japan's most celebrated rock acts, performing at Tokyo Dome and other major venues before the band's initial disbandment in 2000.

Beyond LUNA SEA, Shunya built an impressive solo career, appearing on recordings and live performances alongside artists like Daisuke Oku and Koji Kikkawa. He was also known for his warm personality and engaging presence on television.

LUNA SEA reunited for a one-off Tokyo Dome performance in 2007 and formally restarted in 2010. Even after his cancer diagnosis in 2020, Shunya continued performing with the band, releasing new music including the single "Uchū no Shi" in 2019 for their 30th anniversary.
