Japan's annual celebration of 8cm single CDs is coming back this July 7 with a diverse roster of 24 artists participating in "Tanzaku CD Day 2026," a grassroots effort to keep the compact format alive and support independent record shops.

The 8cm CD—named for its resemblance to the decorative paper strips (tanzaku) hung during Tanabata celebrations—remains a beloved oddity in Japan's music ecosystem. This year's lineup reflects the format's eclectic appeal, mixing nostalgic comebacks with contemporary experimental releases.

H Jungle With t is reissuing "GOING GOING HOME" in limited quantities, while Minayo Watanabe marks her solo debut's 40th anniversary with the new single "GOOD DAY!!" Manga character voice actor Ayahi Miyamoto contributes "Screen," and comedian Tenma Matsunaga releases the tongue-in-cheek "8cm to the Lips / 45 Minutes to the Back."

The roster leans heavily toward Japan's underground music scene. Noise rock band Hijoukaidan offers a live recording from Tokyo's Koenji High venue, while indie acts like 3776 (with their new track "64"), Tokyoかけひき倶楽部, and experimental performers like Jimbae and sommeil sommeil round out the eclectic selection. Several entries remain unannounced, adding mystery to the release.

Tanzaku CD Day operates as a low-key resistance against streaming dominance, emphasizing physicality and the ritual of shopping at record stores. The 8cm format, once standard in Japanese music retail, has become a niche collectors' item—perfect for independent artists and quirky acts seeking an alternative to standard-size CDs or digital-only releases.
