Tatsuro Yamashita's beloved concert film "Theater Live PERFORMANCE 1984-2012" is coming back to Japanese cinemas for a limited two-week run starting August 14, 2026.

The documentary, originally released in 2012, captured performances spanning nearly three decades of the legendary singer-songwriter's career. Despite screening in only 11 theaters initially, it became a box office success, earning 1.1 billion yen and earning repeat theatrical runs in 2019 and a streaming release during the pandemic in 2021. Each iteration was limited, and the film has never been released on physical media, keeping demand high among fans.

This new screening marks a special occasion: Yamashita's 50th anniversary as a solo artist. He began his solo career in 1976 following the dissolution of his band Sugar Babe, going on to become one of Japan's most influential music figures. His 1980 album "Ride on Time" established him as a major force, while his 1987 single "Christmas Eve" has maintained an extraordinary chart presence—appearing in Japan's Top 100 for 30 consecutive years, an achievement recognized by Guinness World Records.

Beyond his own prolific output, Yamashita has shaped Japanese pop culture through production and songwriting for other artists. He's penned tracks for KinKi Kids and Arashi, and created the theme song for Mamoru Hosoda's anime film "Summer Wars." He married fellow musician Mariya Takeuchi in 1982 and has produced her work.

The re-release will reach 25 theaters across Japan, from Tokyo to Okinawa, giving fans nationwide a chance to revisit the concert footage. For those who missed previous releases or want to experience the film on the big screen again, the August run represents a rare opportunity before the inevitable return to limited availability.
