Matsuoka Satoshi of timelesz has designed an official character for Minami-Awaji City in Hyogo Prefecture. The character, called Awaji Uzusuke, was created as a signature mascot for Michi no Eki Uzushio, a renovated roadside rest stop that reopened in October 2024.

Matsuoka, who works as an artist alongside his music career, created Awaji Uzusuke for the facility's large digital display, known as the Uzushio Vision. The character has become popular with visitors, appearing alongside footage of the region's famous whirlpools and seasonal scenery. At the unveiling ceremony last October, Matsuoka attended as a special guest and presented a signed original artwork to Minami-Awaji Mayor Morimoto Norihiro.

The character now carries official municipal status and will serve multiple purposes for the city. Matsuoka's design reflects his commitment to environmental conservation, with the character intended to communicate the importance of protecting the ocean and natural world across all age groups. Awaji Uzusuke will help promote the region's natural attractions and support efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the Naruto Strait's whirlpools.

Beyond city promotion, an "Upcycle Art Project" is underway to create charity goods featuring the character. These items will be made from recycled plastic collected from the ocean, with proceeds donated to NPOs focused on coastal cleanup and environmental protection. The city is also developing tourist merchandise and original goods featuring Awaji Uzusuke.

Matsuoka is a member of timelesz, which formed as Sexy Zone in 2011 before rebranding in 2024. The group expanded to eight members in February 2025 following auditions and recently released the single "Rock this Party." This character design project marks another creative outlet for Matsuoka, demonstrating his commitment to using his platform for environmental advocacy and community engagement.
