Tomonari Sora has a musical technique he loves: reharmonization. It's simple but powerful—keep the same melody, swap out the chord progression underneath, and suddenly the song sounds completely different. A bright morning becomes a melancholy sunset, all without changing a single note.

For the 23-year-old singer-songwriter, travel works the same way. "Travel is a reharmonization of myself," he explains in a new essay for Natalie Music. The core of who he is remains constant—his love for twilight, his curiosity, his artistic voice—but visiting new places rewrites the emotional context around that core.

Tomonari Sora, who burst onto the scene with massive streaming hits like "Oni no Utage" (1.6 billion streams) and viral track "Niramekko," is currently in the middle of his national one-man tour, "Tomonari Sora ONEMAN TOUR 'Shōshō Fūkei'" (May-July 2026). His debut album "Bunmei Kaika - East West," released last November, explored the concept of "drawing the world map through music."

In his travel essay, he describes how the same twilight hour—something that's captivated him since childhood—takes on different meanings across the globe. Watching the sun set over a Taipei street corner filled with scooters and tropical fruit stalls stirs an unexpected homesickness. A solitary drive along a Kagoshima coast road at dusk brings complete peace. Venice's evening canals, where locals gather for prosecco and conversation, brim with anticipation for the night ahead.

"Even though my melody stays the same, when the 'chord progression' of place changes, the meaning of that melody transforms dramatically," he writes.

Tomonari Sora views travel as both external exploration and internal self-discovery. By stepping into unfamiliar landscapes, he gains new perspectives on his own identity—the different facets of who he is and who he's becoming. It's his way of completing an unfinished song.
