Comedian Maeng Seung Ji Officially Retires From Comedy
Korean entertainer Maeng Seung Ji has announced her retirement from comedy after over a decade away from the stage. She plans to focus exclusively on acting and broadcasting moving forward.

Maeng Seung Ji is closing the book on her comedy career. The Korean entertainer announced her official retirement from comedy on May 28th through social media, revealing that she hasn't performed stand-up comedy publicly in over 10 years.
When a fan asked if she was leaving comedy behind, Seung Ji confirmed the decision and explained the timing: "I've already mentally retired from being a comedian! Starting in the second half of the year, I'll officially retire!"
Her comedy journey was brief but memorable. She passed a public recruitment process and performed stand-up for two years, earning Rookie of the Year honors. During that period, she appeared on numerous MBC variety shows and later transitioned to SBS. However, the grind of maintaining comedic timing and forcing humor for entertainment eventually wore on her.
"Honestly, when I appear as a comedian on shows, it's hard to get used to forcing humor just to be funny," she confessed in her post, touching on the emotional toll of the work.
Though her time in comedy was relatively short-lived, Seung Ji isn't stepping away from entertainment entirely. She plans to continue her work as an actress and broadcaster—roles she's maintained throughout her career. In her announcement, she reflected on the bigger picture: "People live almost 100 years, and since I got to try being a comedian once, it was great. I plan to enjoy the second chapter of my life doing work I love and living happily."
Seung Ji expressed relief at finally making the decision public. "Wow, it feels so good to say this out loud!" she wrote, signaling that this shift has been on her mind for some time. The announcement resonated with fans, who responded with understanding to her candid explanation of why the comedian label no longer fit.
With acting and broadcasting as her focus, Seung Ji is set to redefine her career trajectory in the second half of 2026.
