Japan's Video Game Charts Show Nintendo Dominance in Late May
Nintendo titles dominated Japan's video game rankings for May 25-31, with Tomodachi Life claiming the top spot. The week saw strong performance from established franchises and new releases across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

Nintendo's grip on Japan's video game market remained firm during the week of May 25-31, according to Famitsu's latest rankings.
Tomodachi Life led the charts with 52,483 copies sold, bringing its total to over 1.2 million units. The life simulation title continues to draw players months after its April release.
PlayStation 5 briefly challenged Nintendo's dominance with 007 First Light from H2 Interactive debuting at number two with 20,690 copies in its first week. However, Nintendo quickly reclaimed the next four positions. Pokémon Pokopia held steady at third place, while the newly released Yoshi and the Mysterious Book jumped into fourth with 12,701 copies.
AQUAPLUS's Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered appeared twice on the chart—once at number five on PlayStation 5 and again at number nine on Nintendo Switch 2, showing solid performance across both platforms in its debut week.
Established franchises continued performing well. Mario Kart World, Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV, and the omnipresent Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all maintained their presence in the top 20. Nintendo Switch Sports, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate proved these evergreen titles still have lasting appeal among Japanese players.
Microsoft's Minecraft Nippon held its ground at number eight, while Bandai Namco's Tales of Arise - Beyond the Dawn Edition edition appeared at number 12. Sony Interactive Entertainment's Ghost of Yotei, which released in early October 2025, continued moving copies at number 11.
The rankings reflect Japan's ongoing preference for Nintendo's library, particularly its family-friendly and lifestyle simulation offerings. The strong showing from newer releases like Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and the continued momentum of Tomodachi Life suggest players remain engaged with fresh Nintendo content, even as classic titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons maintain their presence.
These rankings represent physical and digital sales tracked by Famitsu, Japan's primary video game industry tracker.
