TOHO Movies confirmed a fresh live-action take on Nobuyuki Fukumoto's gambling manga Kaiji, set to hit theaters January 29, 2027. The film, titled Kaiji: Jinsei Revenge Game (Kaiji: Life Revenge Game), continues the franchise's expansion beyond its anime origins into live-action territory.

Tatsuya Fujiwara returns as protagonist Kaiji Itou for what marks his fourth time playing the character across live-action films. The actor previously starred in the 2009 Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler, 2011 Kaiji 2 - Jinsei Dakkai Game, and 2020 Kaiji Final Game. Director Tōya Satō also returns behind the camera. Composer Yūgo Kanno handles the score, while Masatoshi Yamaguchi wrote the script with input from Fukumoto himself.

The story follows down-on-his-luck Kaiji as he's trapped by yakuza into increasingly dangerous gambling scenarios. What began as a manga serialized from 1996 to 1999 in Young Magazine has become a multimedia phenomenon, spawning two anime series, three previous Japanese live-action films, a Chinese adaptation, and even a reality game show.

Fukumoto's manga currently sits in limbo. The series entered hiatus in June 2023 for research purposes and never fully resumed. The original manga also received an English-language release through Denpa, marking Fukumoto's first official English publication. The property gained additional international attention after influencing the 2017 Chinese film Animal World.

Interestingly, Fukumoto announced in 2024 that the Kaiji manga will conclude in its next story arc, though no confirmed return date has been announced. That makes this new film particularly intriguing timing—whether it adapts existing material or charts new territory for the character remains unclear from available information.

With January 2027 still months away, TOHO Movies' early teaser suggests the studio is counting on the franchise's loyal fanbase to drive ticket sales. For longtime Kaiji fans, this represents another chance to see their favorite debt-ridden gambler face off against impossible odds.
