Aksys Games just dropped a fresh trailer for Over Requiemz, and it comes with a preview of the game's opening song. The track, titled "Muted Expectations" and performed by Hisano, sets the tone for this dark take on L. Frank Baum's classic tale.

Over Requiemz is a collaboration between Idea Factory and Kogado Studio, marking an interesting choice to adapt The Wizard of Oz into the otome game space. Rather than Dorothy, the protagonist is Yuhiru, a high school student who gets caught in a mysterious tornado and transported to Oz. But this isn't the whimsical version from the books—she faces a death sentence upon arrival.

The setup sounds grim, and the story reflects that tone. Yuhiru is forced to travel with four death row convicts and their supervisor on a journey to mysterious ruins that resemble her home, only decrepit and monster-infested. The game emphasizes hard choices and moral weight: "No one is lost forever, no matter how far they've strayed," according to the official description.

The otome angle means romance and character relationships will likely play a central role, though the darker narrative suggests this won't be a lighthearted dating sim. It's a compelling contrast—intimate character arcs set against a dangerous, melancholic backdrop.

Over Requiemz already launched in Japan back in April 2025, so this Western release has been in the works for a while. The August 20 Nintendo Switch launch date gives Western fans about two months to mark their calendars.

If you're into otome games with a literary twist or just curious how a dark reimagining of Oz might work as an interactive experience, this one's worth keeping on your radar. The trailer is available now through Aksys Games' channels.
