Ryōhei Kimura will voice Nagakura Shinpachi in the upcoming original anime Inherit the Winds (Kaze wo Tsugumono), the project's official account confirmed this week. The series is set to premiere in January 2027 across CBC, TBS, and 26 affiliated networks as part of the "Agaru Anime" programming block, with an early theatrical preview screening planned for later this year.

The anime's story follows a soldier who has lost his memories in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu era—a turbulent period in Japanese history. Okita Sōji, the famous Shinsengumi swordsman, finds the man and names him Tachikawa Jinsuke, setting him on a new path among the Mibu soldiers.

The full voice cast includes Daisuke Sakuma (Snow Man) as Jinsuke, Yūki Kaji as Okita Sōji, Aoi Yūki as Koganei Hyōgo, Kōki Uchiyama as Hijikata Toshizō, Yūichi Nakamura as Kondō Isami, and Nichika Ōmori as Kurosuke.

Inherit the Winds is an original project from playwright and Caramel Box founder Yutaka Narui, working with Aniplex on the story. Narui, who has created several stage productions themed around the Shinsengumi, is also handling the script. Tomohiro Kawamura directs at Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc., with character design by Fumi Ebina and music from Shigeru Kishida.

The project expands beyond animation—a four-panel manga adaptation will launch on the Star Seas Company's Twi4 (Tsuiyon) account in 2026, illustrated by Matsuri Muramatsu. While Narui previously wrote a stage play with the same title, the anime is officially classified as an original TV series.

With its historical setting, established voice cast, and multi-format approach, Inherit the Winds looks positioned to appeal to fans of period dramas and historical anime when it arrives next January.
