Sentai Filmworks Brings 4K Ninja Scroll to Theaters This October
Sentai Filmworks will screen the newly restored 4K version of the classic Ninja Scroll anime film on October 4, 5, and 7 across the U.S. and Canada. The restoration marks the film's theatrical return following its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.

Sentai Filmworks is bringing the restored Ninja Scroll anime film back to theaters this fall. The company will screen the 4K version on October 4, 5, and 7 in the U.S. and Canada, giving fans a chance to experience Yoshiaki Kawajiri's 1993 classic on the big screen in unprecedented quality.
The restoration process was meticulous. Sentai scanned the original 35mm negative at 4K resolution (3840x2160 pixels), then performed extensive damage repair and color correction under Kawajiri's supervision. The result represents the first time the film has been presented in this format.
This theatrical run follows the film's world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where it made history as the first anime film featured in the festival's Berlinale Classics section. Sentai has already announced plans for a limited edition 4K UHD Blu-ray Steelbook release in early 2027.
For those who want to watch it at home before the theatrical screening, HIDIVE has been streaming Ninja Scroll since November 2024 in both Japanese with English subtitles and the original English dub.
Ninja Scroll follows Jubei, a skilled ninja who rescues a young woman only to find himself drawn into investigating mysterious deaths and uncovering a demonic conspiracy. Kawajiri directed, wrote, and designed characters for the film at Studio Madhouse. When it premiered in Japan in 1993, it eventually became a cable TV staple in America and developed a dedicated fanbase over the decades.
Sentai Filmworks licensed the film in 2012 and has been instrumental in preserving this landmark work for new and longtime fans alike. The theatrical screenings come roughly 30 years after the film's original U.S. theatrical run, which was commemorated with special AX Cinema Nights screenings last September.
For anime fans who've never experienced Ninja Scroll or those looking to revisit it, the October screenings offer a rare chance to see one of anime's most influential films in restored 4K quality on the big screen.
