An animated feature film is in development based on "Living in a World Without Magic," the massively popular music video created by illustrator Akiwashi and Euluca Lab. as a graduation project back in 2022.

The original video debuted on YouTube on July 1, 2022, and has since accumulated over 6.39 million views. Akiwashi handled directing, scriptwriting, character design, animation, backgrounds, 3D CG, and compositing entirely solo. The video featured vocals from Natsuki Hanae and philo, and author Mamoru Iwasa later adapted the story into a novel published by Kadokawa.

The story follows a lost boy named Haru who's taken in by Sara, a mysterious one-eyed witch living on a floating island above the town of Urgalz. As warmth gradually replaces the silence between them, Haru becomes drawn into Sara's hidden past and the forgotten history of the witches.

International Push

Singapore-based anime studio Kasagi Labo is leading the film's international expansion. The studio plans to showcase the project at industry panels and fan events throughout the coming months. Notably, Masao Maruyama—co-founder of both Madhouse and MAPPA—will participate in a panel discussion at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 24, alongside Kasagi Labo's chief production officer Tony S. Izumi, a former Madhouse Beijing CEO.

Kasagi Labo will also maintain a booth at Anime Expo from July 2-5, giving North American fans a chance to learn more about the project in person.

Fan Support Campaign

To generate early backing, the English-language site AnimeOshi is running a Mahoseka Film Club campaign through July 8. Supporters can pre-back the film's release in exchange for exclusive club benefits, helping gauge interest and secure funding for the theatrical adaptation.

This marks a significant opportunity for independent animation to reach a wider audience. What started as a solo passion project has evolved into a proper studio production with genuine theatrical ambitions and international distribution backing.
